What does any church need for their women to flourish?

We need a healthy, vibrant Women’s Ministry!
Titus 2:2-3 lays out the unique role that ‘older women’ (i.e. further along not necessarily in age but in the faith) have in teaching younger women and training them to lead gospel-shaped lives. It was a task that Titus could not fulfil, nor could a male elder. Younger women need older women discipling them!
What does it take for such a ministry to take shape? In one sense, it doesn’t take much at all. You’ll need an older woman, a younger woman, and a Bible! (Coffee and cake are optional).
That’s because women’s ministry is all about God, and about seeing His glory, through His Word. It’s about women being drawn into closer relationship with God by hearing Him speak, obeying the commandments of our Lord Jesus, and going on to encourage other women in the same way. Thus, the most crucial thing–the most loving thing–that any woman can do for another, is to be looking at God’s Word with them, and encouraging them to live it out in the everyday.
Here are some questions for the women among us:
- Are you convinced that the Christian life is designed to be lived out alongside other women who love and seek to obey Jesus, just like we see in Titus 2 (and everywhere else in the NT)?
- Who would you consider as a ‘older woman’ journeying with you as a Christian? If you don’t have someone like that now, who around you could you ask to disciple you personally, or to link you up with someone who could?
- Who would you consider as a ‘younger woman’ whose life you could be investing into? What might be holding you back from reaching out? If you’re already discipling a younger woman or two (or many more), how can you be encouraging a peer to do the same for others?
And to the men who do have a significant woman (wife, mother, daughter etc.) in your life:
- How are you encouraging her ongoing discipleship?
- In what ways are you lovingly challenging her to be reading the Bible and sharing life with a younger woman?
What does any church need for their women to flourish? We need a healthy, vibrant women’s ministry. May Zion be a church that continues to disciple our women well, so that they truly flourish in their love and obedience of the Lord Jesus!
